How Scan-to-Sound works

The wellness practice you can measure.

Most wellness apps ask how you feel. MeloKura measures it, matches a SoundScape to what your body is showing, and rescans so you can see the change.

The definition

What Scan-to-Sound is.

Scan-to-Sound is a wellness practice in which a scan, a matched SoundScape and a rescan form a closed loop – so you can see the change in your own numbers rather than just describe how you feel.

Measurement is the starting point

A 30-second contactless scan reads your heart rate, heart rate variability and breathing rate. That gives you a real baseline to compare against. Scan whenever you want one – before and after a session, or once a day to follow your trend. You can always just listen.

The match is based on your scan

Your SoundScape is matched to your measured state by the system, not chosen from a catalogue. The match is based on what your body is showing, not on what the mind is in the mood for.

The listening is low-friction

Your matched SoundScape plays through whatever audio you have – headphones, speaker, car – without requiring posture, location or special attention. The listening fits around your day.

The change shows in your numbers

When the session ends, a second scan captures your new state. The two scans sit side by side: before and after, in plain numbers. The change is shown in the data, not assumed.

Together, these four steps form what we call the measured loop – and the loop is what makes Scan-to-Sound different from wellness audio, meditation apps or biofeedback.

What a scan feels like

Easier than a selfie.

No appointment, no equipment, no learning curve. Here's all there is to it.

How-it-Works-Step-1-Sit-comfortably

01

Sit comfortably

FACE THE DAYLIGHT

Sit facing a window so natural light falls evenly on your face – this is what gives you an accurate result. Get your face and shoulders in frame at arm's length – the app guides you.

How-it-Works-Step-2-Breathe-naturally

02

Breathe naturally

Stay still, breathe normally.

About 30 seconds. Keep your face still and breathe as you normally would – no need to perform.

How-it-Works-Step-3-Get-your-results

03

Get your results

YOUR RESULTS APPEAR INSTANTLY.

The scan finishes and your results land on one screen, with the SoundScape matched to your state.

The gap it fills

A wellness category built on faith - and the practice built to change that.

The wellness industry is enormous. And yet, across almost the entire category, one fact holds.

There is no measurement.

Wellness apps ask how you feel before a session, ask again afterwards, and call the difference progress. Meditation apps track minutes logged but not what changed. Wearables measure your body but give you nothing to listen to. Biofeedback combines the two, but in clinical settings that require equipment, training and time most people don't have.

Scan-to-Sound was created to close that gap. It uses the camera that already lives in everyone's pocket, remote photoplethysmography – a camera-based technique peer-reviewed since the late 2000s – and a catalogue of SoundScapes built from frequencies and studied in research at Aalborg University and in South Korea.

What it produces is something neither side of the market could offer alone: wellness you can measure.

The principles

What makes a practice Scan-to-Sound.

Four principles distinguish Scan-to-Sound from adjacent wellness practices. Together they form the criteria for the category.

Measurement is the starting point

A session that begins with feeling and ends with feeling leaves you guessing. A scan gives you a baseline, so you can see what a session changed. Scan whenever you want a baseline – you can always just listen.

The match is based on your scan

Choosing your own audio from a library works only when you happen to choose well. Scan-to-Sound reads your measured state and matches a SoundScape to it. You don't have to know what you need – your scan points the way.

The listening is low-friction

A practice that requires special equipment, dedicated time or a specific posture limits who can use it and how often. Scan-to-Sound works with whatever audio is to hand – headphones, speakers, or car audio on the commute. The practice fits the day. The day doesn't have to fit the practice.

The change shows in your numbers

After listening, a second scan compares your numbers with your baseline. The difference is shown side by side and tracked over time. Without this step, a wellness practice may be soothing or pleasant – but it isn't Scan-to-Sound.

The science

What Scan-to-Sound is built on.

Scan-to-Sound is built on three areas of established science.

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG)

The technique used to read heart rate, heart rate variability and breathing rate from a face using only a camera. Foundational work emerged from MIT and Eindhoven University of Technology in the late 2000s, and rPPG has since been studied in hundreds of validation studies.

Heart rate variability (HRV)

The millisecond-level variation between heartbeats, widely used as an indicator of how the nervous system balances activity and rest. HRV is the most informative measure in MeloScan and the basis for its stress, recovery and resilience insights.

SoundScapes and the body

MeloKura has been studied in research at Aalborg University and in EEG/HRV research in South Korea. In the Aalborg study, MeloKura improved muscle coordination and efficiency, while ordinary relaxing music showed no effect on the same measures.

Questions · Scan-to-Sound

The conceptual answers.

  • Biofeedback measures the body and guides a response, but usually in clinical settings that require equipment, training and dedicated time. Scan-to-Sound keeps the measuring and drops the friction: a camera instead of sensors, a matched SoundScape instead of a guided protocol, 30 seconds instead of an appointment.

  • A meditation app logs minutes and asks how you feel. It has no baseline and no measurement afterwards. Scan-to-Sound measures before, matches a SoundScape to that measurement, and measures again after – so you can see the change in your own numbers.

  • No. A phone, tablet or laptop camera for the scan, and whatever audio you already have for the listening - headphones, a speaker, or your car. No wearables, no sensors, nothing to buy.

  • 30 seconds to scan, 30–40 minutes to listen, 30 seconds to rescan. Better Sleep Support runs through the night (5 or 8 hours).

  • The scanning engine behind MeloScan has been validated against reference instruments. MeloKura's SoundScapes have been studied in research at Aalborg University and in South Korea. Scan-to-Sound is a wellness practice, not a medical treatment.

  • Rather than ask you to take that on faith, the loop answers it: scan, listen to your matched SoundScape, rescan and read the difference. Your own numbers show how you respond.

  • No. MeloKura is a wellness and lifestyle platform. It does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition, and it is not a substitute for professional care - use it alongside, never instead.
